  • Put a new line between assignments #3 and #4.
  • Put your answer ABOVE the previous assignment.
  • Copy this assignment to your page.
  • Add the date above this assignment.
  • Start a plot line. Identify the setting first.
  • Add two or three key events from each chapter that we have read - chapters 1-6 – reflecting on the rising action.
  • Identify each chapter and put the two or three events as complete sentences under the chapter number.
  • For example:
Setting
Time and Place
Chapter 1
· The characters arrive at Sticklehaven off the coast of Devon, intent on traveling to Indian Island, which has been in the news lately because it is surrounded by mystery.
· The main characters wonder about the people they meet, and are excited at the chance to spend a week at this luxurious island.

Chapter 2

Two or three bulleted sentences explaining your events.

Setting:
And Then There Were None mostly took place on Indian Island, which was an Island off the coast of New England. In the beginning, however, they were all traveling from where ever they came from, to Devon, the mainland that had grocery stores, libraries, and hotels. They came by trains, met up in Devon and went over together - all strangers - to the mysterious island by boat. The time of this book was probably sometime around 1930-1940. You can tell because they all came by train. If it was modern, they would of come by plane. Also, there are no cell phones or computers that they could communicate with the mainland with, all they had was a house phone that could easily loose connection - especially in a storm.

Chapter 1:
  • Each character is summoned to the Island for a different reason.
  • They each read their letters on their way to Devon and imagine what kind of activities they will doing while on their retreat to this island with their mystery host.
Chapter 2:
  • Vera and Lombard start getting to know each other while waiting for General MacArthur, while the others head to the modern mansion on the island.
  • Each of them goes to their room and unpacks and some of the guests notice the "Ten Little Indians" poem.
Chapter 3:
  • During dinner, there is a sudden voice that comes from a gramophone that Mr. Rodgers was told to play.
  • It accused each one of the guests of murder of someone else.
  • Mrs. Rodgers was so shocked that she fainted and Dr. Armstrong gave her some medicine to help her cope with it.
Chapter 4:
  • Each of the guests defends themselves about their accusations.
  • Every member is willing to tell their story except Emily Brent, and Dr. Armstrong, who denies knowing his client that he killed while operating under the influence of alcohol.
  • Anthony Marston takes a sip of his whiskey and falls over a few minutes later...dead.
Chapter 5:
  • They examine his drink and find that its been poisoned.
  • Although the poison had to get there some how, so they assume that he either committed suicide, or there is a murderer among them.
  • Some of the guests such as Vera and Justice Wargrave remember their murder that they hadn't tried thinking about for a while.
Chapter 6:
  • Mrs. Rodgers will not wake up, so Mr. Rodgers goes to Dr. Armstrong and he finds her dead, but for no reason such as heart failure.
  • While all the guests are waiting to leave to island on the morning boat that brought food, Blore, Lombard, and General MacArthur are doubtful and decide the boat's not coming so they are stuck on the island.
  • While they are deciding that, Mr. Rodgers points out to Dr. Armstrong that two china figures are missing and now there are only eight.

Very well done. Chapter summaries hit the main events! Good job.
Mrs. M

Chapter 7:
  • Vera and Emily take a walk on the mountain and Emily Brent discusses her accusation about Beatrice Taylor.
  • The motor boat is absent, leaving the guests stuck on the island, definitely part of their mystery host's plan.
Chapter 8:
  • Dr. Armstrong, Philip Lombard, and Mr. Blore gather and agree to search the island for the murder.
  • Blore questions as to why Lombard should need a revolver when he was supposed to come for a retreat and Lombard tells him the truth about why he was summoned there.
Chapter 9:
  • Blore accuses Dr. Armstrong over accidently giving an overdose to Mrs. Rodgers while Dr. Armstrong denies it strongly.
  • When the lunch bell rings, everyone shows up but General MacArthur, so Dr. Armstrong goes back to get him, but finds him dead.
  • Justice Wargrave also says that the murderer is not on the island, so it must be one of them!
Chapter 10:
  • Vera and Lombard decide that neither of them is the murderer and they both share their opinions on who the murderer could be.
  • Emily Brent writes in her diary that Beatrice Taylor is the murder--maybe she DOES feel guilty about it.
  • Rodgers notices that the scarlet shower curtain is missing and asks the guests if they knew about it, but they all act calm but all inside they are scared.
Chapter 11:
  • Lombard wakes early and notices that Rogers is missing, so he wakes up all the other guests.
  • Emily Brent is missing but turns up later saying she was walking around on the island, and they go search for Rogers.
  • Vera notices that another china figurine is missing from the tray before they left.
  • They find Mr. Rogers in the shed where you chop wood, with a huge gash in his head - dead.
  • Vera notices the pattern of the "Ten Little Indians" poem and freaks out, so Dr. Armstrong slaps her.
Chapter 12:
  • Emily Brent stays in the room and remembers Beatrice and thinks she hears noises of a wet, dead murderer coming up behind her, she then sees a bee, and the bee flies towards her, stings her, and kills her.
  • Dr. Armstrong does an autopsy and sees that she didn't die of a bee sting, but of cyanide injection.
  • He is accused to killing her, because he is the only one who had cyanide with him.
  • Justice Wargrave takes away everything that could possibly be dangerous and locks them in a pantry and gives the keys to Blore and Lombard.
Chapter 13:
  • Vera while in the bath feels a wet seaweed touch her neck and she thinks it is a wet, clammy hand trying to murder her so she screams and all the others come rushing up the stairs.
  • While they are up there they notice that Wargrave isn't with them so they go downstairs and find him shot in the forehead looking like a judge with a gray yarn wig, and a scarlet shower curtain robe.
Chapter 14:
  • After they carry Wargrave to his room, they sit and think about everything that's happening and reminisce on their past.
  • Then while Blore is thinking he hears noises outside his room so he investigates and as he walks out he sees a figure leave the house.
  • He wakes up Lombard and Claythorne and notcies the Dr. Armstrong is missing.
  • Lombard finds his revolver, exactly where he left it in the first place.
  • At the end of the chapter, Vera notices that theres only three indian boys left on the table.
Chapter 15:
  • Blore accuses Lombard of having the revolver the whole time- therefore being the person who killed Justice Wargrave.
  • They spent the whole day trying to contact the mainland by reflecting a mirror with the sun.
  • Vera feels safer out in the open where she can see people coming but Blore wanted to go back into the house so he left Lombard and Claythorne there.
  • They hear a scream and run back to the house to find Blore dead, with a clock from Vera's room that fell on him.
  • The remaining two find Armstrongs body - blue and drowned- washed ashore.
Chapter 16:
  • Vera suggests that they carry the body away from the shore.
  • During that time, she grabbed his revolver and when he started to accuse her and say the end has come, she points it at him.
  • He tries to remain calm and get it back but she pulls the trigger and shoots him through the heart.
  • Vera alone on the island then starts going mental and notices that there are still three indians left on the table, so she decides to break two and keeps the last one with her.
  • She then remembers Hugo and thinks he is waiting for her upstairs, and she notices a hook hanging from the ceiling. She thinks Hugo wants her to hang herself.
  • She then remembers the last line of the poem and without thinking about anything she goes and kicks away the chair, therefore, killing herself.
Epilogue:
  • Two policemen went to investigate Indian Island as soon as they could only to find 10 ten bodies, that were all murdered.
  • They take each guest one by one and read some of the guests journals to decide the order of death.
  • However, they realize someone HAD to be alive after Vera hung herself because the chair she kicked over was put neatly against the wall.
  • They cannot decide who the murder was, but they know it must have been one of the guests that were on the island.
Manuscript:
  • Justice Wargrave was the one who confessed killing all of them.
  • He had chosen people who had a case of murder that the law couldn't reach.
  • He explains how he chose for each of them to die and how he killed them without accusations towards himself.
  • He sent it out in a bottle stating that if it was ever found, that they couldnt do anything because he had a system set up so when we pulled the trigger of the revolver, it would shoot him the forehead, just as the other guests thought he died.

Climax:
I think the climax was when Armstrong goes missing and they all suspect each other. After that, their lives fall apart and within another day, there were none

Great guess, Alli. Back up a little bit and include Wargrave's fake death. Now that both the judge and the doctor are out of the picture, it adds to the chaos and to the suspicion that no one can trust anyone. After that we have the falling action which leads to the manuscript, or what ends up being the resolution. All the unanswered questions are now answered!

Hope you enjoyed the novel!

Assignment #2 Due October 22
  • Put a line above Assignment #1; assignment #2 will go above assignment #1.
  • Read chapter two.
  • Choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
  • With your small group, find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
  • Each member of your group must write on his or her WIKI page the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
  • Then, in a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing.
  • Read chapter three for Monday, October 25.

Suspense~

1. Page 26-
"Queer buisness when you came to think of it-the whole thing was queer--very queer...."

This could be suspense because when you read those words, something makes it seem more suspenseful, like the emphasis at the end the "queer--very queer...." It adds the extra point, that something isn't quite right, and you need to figure out what. It keeps you hooked and wondering whats wrong with everyone.

2. Page 31-
"Ten little Indian boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self and then there were nine.
Nine little Indian boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself and there were eight.
Eight little Indian boys travelling in Devon;
One said he'd stay there and then there were seven
Seven little Indian boys chopping up sticks;
One chopped himself in halves and then there were six.
Six little Indian boys playing with a hive;
A bumblebee stung one and then there were five.
Five little Indian boys going in for law;
One got in Chancery and then there were four
Four little indian boys going out to sea;
A red herring swallowed one and then there were three.
Three little indian boys walking to the Zoo;
A big bear hugged one and then there were two.
Two little Indian boys, sitting in the sun;
ONe got firzzled up and then there was one.
ONe little indian boy left all alone;
he went and hanged himself and then there were none."

That whole poem really is a great example of foreshadowing AND suspense. It's clearly impossible to read that whole poem with wanting to know more at the end, and how that relates to the book. Overall, it leaves you hanging off a cliff, wanting more, and wanting to continue reading to find out what happens.

3. Page 32-
"The sea...So peaceful by day-sometimes so cruel...The sea that dragged you down to its depths. Drowned...found drowned...Drowned at sea...Drowned-drowned-drowned...
No she wouldn't remember....She would NOT think of it!
All of that was over..."

This is an example of suspense because it definitely shows past-troubles and suspense. When you read it, it makes you wonder why she is so sensitive about drowning. What filled her past that she cannot think of it without shuddering. It makes you want to continue reading and figure out why drowning makes her freak out.

4. Page 38-
"Her lips moved as she followed the words:
'The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. The Lord is known by the judgement which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. The wicked shall be turned into hell.'
Her tight lips closed. She shut the Bible."

After reading this, its hard to wonder why she was reading that specific passage and why she got tight and makes it think that she is wicked and something with that passage, leaves you with unanswered questions that will not be revealed unless you read on!

Again, very good explanations for the choices you've made. I like your reasoning power to make inferences.

  • how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?

  • how might the title be a clue to the story?

A mysery novel differs from a narrative in several ways. A narrative is a story told by a narrator or a person telling a story from their point of view. When you read narratives, its harder to think of what might happen when A mystery novel reveals clues as you read and has foresight about what might happen next. It requires you to think about whats happening and connect that to what is coming. When you read a mystery they often have cliff hanger endings that leave you wondering, "What will happen next?!" The title might be a good clue because there are many characters in the beginning and eventually and gradually they all die or something happens to all of the them that they leave the island, leaving no one left there.
In this story i can make many hypothesis'. I think that they all will end up dying or leaving the island and it will leave you wondering who and how it all happened. I think the character Mr. Blore will end up being the first to die. This is supported by the end of the first chapter, possibly a foresight, of whats in store. I think he is the same person as Mr. Owen. He knows everybody and what they are doing and he knows everything about everyone. He will definitely be a big part of this novel.

Allie-
Great predictions and reasons for the predictions. I hope you're enjoying the story.
